Onir’s passion for literature and film dates back to 1986, when he left Bhutan and came to Kolkata for higher education. While pursuing his degree in Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University, he studied German, Russian, Bengali, and Tamil. During this time he also completed a Film studies course at Chitrabani in Kolkata.In 1991, Onir made his first documentary Glimpses of a College Street at a workshop organized by Max Muller Bhavan and Chitrabani. He then received a Scholarship for training at SFB/TTC in Berlin. Upon returning to India in 1992, he produced and directed Fallen Hero, his first independent documentary portraying a painter’s life and his dilemma with the volatile political discourse in Bengal. In 1999, he worked as the editor and song designer for Daman, a celebrated feature directed by Kalpana Lajmi.In 2004, Onir directed and co-produced his first film My Brother Nikhil, distributed by the top privately owned studio in India Yash Raj Film–the first mainstream Hindi film specifically addressing homosexuality in the context of human rights and HIV AIDS. In 2006, Onir directed his second feature film Bas Ek Pal.In 2008, Onir and Sanjay produced Onir’s third feature film Sorry Bhai, distributed by Mumbai Mantra.Onir’s empathy for victims of social injustice, sensitivity as a director, and experience in producing independent feature films sets him apart from others.
About Sanjay Suri
Sanjay Suri has been associated with the Indian Film & Entertainment Industry for over fifteen years as one of the favourite actors of the Indie filmmakers. Sanjay acted in his first film, “Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi” in 1999 and since then, has been in the forefront of the current revolution that the Indian Film Industry has been going through. Sanjay has so far acted in 25 feature films. His filmography in the past includes trendsetting films like JHANKAAR BEATS, National Award Winners like FIRAAQ, PINJAR, DAMAN and FILHAAL.
In 2005, Sanjay independently produced and starred in My Brother Nikhil under the banner of Four Front Films, a film that won many hearts and awards worldwide and further broke the norms of the Indian Film Industry. It was the first feature in India where the protagonist was a homosexual and the film dealt with the stigma of HIV. The film was widely accepted and critically acclaimed internationally and within India where it was distributed by the top privately owned studio Yash Raj Films. The film was premiered at the prestigious “Frameline film festival”, in San Francisco followed by Winning the Jury & Audience Award at Montreal (Image+ Nation film festival), the Audience Choice award at the 20th Milan International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival and continued to be screened at many more festivals. Sanjay Co Produced his 2nd feature film titled “Sorry Bhai!”(Sorry Brother!), under the banner of “Anticlock Films Pvt Ltd”. The film was acquired and released by a Studio (Mumbai Mantra) in India.
“I AM” is Sanjay’s 3rd feature film as a Producer, made under the banner of “Anticlock Films”. The Film project is one of India’s first crowd sourced films and was premiered in New York at the I-View Film Festival and had its Canadian Premier at the “Vancouver International Film Festival ’2010”. I AM was also officially selected at Guggenhiem BERLIN’ 2010 and Won the NETPAC Award for Best in Asian Cinema and Special Jury Mention at the 15th International Film Festival of Kerala 2010. I AM deals with issues and dilemmas that bruise the modern Indian society. Sanjay’s newly formed production company, “Kahwa Entertainment”, with its associates is in Feature Film Production, Short Films and Content Development. Kahwa Entertainment’s latest short film UNTOLD had its New York Premiere at the Tenth Annual MIAAC film festival 2010 (Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council) and officially selected for the London Asian Film Festival.
Sanjay’s diverse experience as an Actor and an Independent Producer empowers him with tremendous knowledge of production, creativity and marketing, which are essential for any successful independent producer. Sanjay also participated in the 10th edition of Rotterdam Producers Lab. 2010 at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, 2010 alongside the 27th edition of CineMart.
